Caroline Willingham-Higgins
Nationally Certified Massage Therapist
Caroline has been a massage therapist since December
2001. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill as a Morehead Scholar and member of Phi Beta Kappa in 1999
with a double B.A. in Political Science and Religious Studies. She
completed her professional training at the Potomac Massage Training
Institute in Washington, DC, in 2001, was awarded national certification
in January 2002, and spent the next year and a half as a massage
therapist for three DC-area Washington Sports Clubs. During that
time, she worked with a wide variety of athletes, weekend warriors
and professionals included, and continued to hone her skills in
Swedish and Deep Tissue massage. She spent several days volunteering
at the Pentagon in the days following the September 11 attacks,
giving chair massages to search and rescue workers, Salvation Army
volunteers, and law enforcement professionals in the Pentagon parking
lot where recovery efforts were centered.
In August of 2002, Caroline took Kate Jordan’s Bodywork for
the Childbearing Year seminar and was granted national certification
in Pre- and Post-Natal Massage. In March 2003, Caroline traveled
to Chiang Mai, Thailand, to be trained in traditional Thai massage.
She spent six weeks in the country learning, practicing, and receiving
regular Thai massage. Caroline spent five months in southeast Asia
in the fall of 2003, where she was able to experience massage traditions
in India, Nepal, and Tibet. She moved to Boulder in November 2004
with her husband, Jim, and black Labrador puppy, Tenzing. In February
2005, Caroline took the International Loving Touch Foundation’s
Certified Infant Massage Instructor Training, and she is looking
forward to integrating this knowledge into her practice.
In her free time, Caroline spends a lot of her time outdoors, mostly
climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, and skiing. She also loves reading,
cooking, and traveling.
Caroline believes that all of us are in need of more positive touch
in our lives. As our lives become ever more rushed and pressured,
we find fewer and fewer opportunities for actual physical contact
with other people. On the clinical side, massage has been shown
to increase circulation, improve respiration, ease digestion, and
facilitate recovery from muscular injury and soreness. It relaxes
the body and mind and calms the spirit. Massage eases us into a
slower way of life, where we can lie on a warm table with gentle
music and calming hands to work out life’s stresses. Caroline’s
massages are designed to promote both healing and relaxation.
